DISCOVER OUR LEGACY

The
, the building likely referred to as the "Lagoon Building" in Hilo, Hawaii, was built in 1971 and originally functioned as a hotel. It has since been converted into a mixed-use commercial and residential condominium complex.
History
-
Construction and Opening: The 10-story concrete structure was completed in 1971 and initially operated as a hotel. It was, at the time, one of the tallest buildings in the area.
-
Post-Tsunami Development: The building is located on land that was created using landfill after the devastating 1960 tsunami, part of a development effort for the area around the Wailoa River State Recreation Area.
-
Conversion: In the early 1980s, the hotel was converted into a mixed-use, fee simple condominium project, comprising both residential and commercial units.
-
Management: Operations of the original hotel were managed by Hawaiian Pacific Resorts.
Current Use
Today, the Hilo Lagoon Centre is a prominent landmark in downtown Hilo and continues as a mixed-use facility. It houses:
-
Commercial Offices: Located on the first to third floors and the penthouse level. Tenants include law offices, accounting firms, and medical services.
-
Residential Condos: Located on the fourth to ninth floors, with units ranging from studios to two-bedrooms.
-
Amenities: The building offers 24-hour security, a pool, a conference room, and a serene koi pond, and is adjacent to Wailoa State Park.
The building's central location next to the State and County government buildings makes it a busy hub for both living and business in Hilo.
